When I send email attachments - don't seem to matter what
kind, it has happened with MS word docs and pdf files -
when the recipient receives the attachment it has changed
from a .doc or .pdf file to a .dat file. Is there a
setting somewhere that I'm missing? Any help would would
be greatly appreciated!!

On the main Outlook Window, if you select Tools | Options | Mail Format, and
change the message format to HTML or Plain Text, does this still occur?

The setting was on html - changed it to plain text! It
worked on an excel document. Thanks for your help!

I had the same problem (only with excel-files) sending form kmail
(Linux) to outlook. The problem was solved when I changed the mimetype
from application/msexcel (this is the standard my mailprogram sets) to
application/vnd.ms-excel manually. Perhaps this helps you (I found out
the "right" mimetype when receiving an excel file from somebody using
outlook).
