Generally speaking:
If it is a POP account, they are stored in the PST file.
If it is an IMAP or WebMail account, it is in an OST file.
If it is an Exchange account, if you have it delivered locally, it's in the
PST file. If you run in cached mode, it's in the OST file. If you don't
run in cached mode, it doesn't store them, your Exchange server does.

If you view the file in Outlook's preview pane, nothing changes.
If you open the file from Outlook,

I'm confused. In Outlook 2003, it stored them in a folder that I backed up.
In Outlook 2007, those attachments are somewhere else, but I don't know
where. If I understand your reply correctly, it's now stored within the PST
file (I have a POP account) in with the e-mail messages themselves. Is this
correct? It seems pretty radical.

Sorry, but that's flat-out wrong. Outlook 2003 stores attachments within
the message, just like every other version of Outlook.

Like Brian said, 2003 did it the exact same way as 2007. And 2000. And XP.
And 97. And 98.

Now, that said, *you* might have installed an autosave script in 2003 that
automatically saved attachments to the hard drive on message arrival. But
that's not a feature of the software.

http://www.sperrysoftware.com/Outloo...hment-Save.asp is a pay solution,
if you want to write your own, or adapt some code, I'd search
http://www.outlookcode.com.
