Hi Folks

I don't know whether or not this fault might be due to the Service Pack I
recently downloaded but its a ****** nuisance. I have to 'Save to' a
non-Mail folder then, using Windows Explorer, open it there.

Anyone found a cure, please?

Cheers,
John (IDontBelieveIt)

It seems that you recently installed IE8. Right?
If so, you get bitten by a bug which affects many systems (not the
majority).

> Anyone found a cure, please?

No cure yet, except uninstalling IE8.

The problem can be reduced to JPG and TXT files with a workaround:
Right-click on the shortcut that you use to open Windows Mail. Select
Properties. In the field labeled 'Start in' change the entered value to
%UserProfile%. Click OK. Restart Windows Mail and try opening
attachments.

WinMail: Tools | Options | Security | Block images... <=if you
disable/uncheck this option, does the behavior persist?

Have you installed IE8 as well as SP1?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed, is your
subscription current, and is it supported in IE8? What anti-spyware
applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall (if any)?
Were any of these applications running in the background when you installed
IE8 and/or SP1?

Has a Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this machine
(e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought it)?

Do you have an available Restore Point which predates the install of IE8?
<=Just asking for now!!

Hi Rainald

Many thanks for replying. Yes, I did install IE8. Most of the attachments
I receive are .pdf files so your suggested method would be fine. Thanks.

Cheers
John

Hi PA Bear

Thanks for replying. I'll have a go at Rainald's suggestion. Answers to
points you raised:-

WinMail: Tools | Options | Security | Block images... <=if you
> disable/uncheck this option, does the behavior persist?

I might try it and see

Have you installed IE8 as well as SP1?
Yes, both

anti-virus application or security suite
AVG free is installed. No anti-spyware other than Defender. No
third-party firewall.

Were any of these applications running in the background when you installed
IE8 and/or SP1?
No.

McAfee application ever been installed?
Came pre-loaded. I removed because of troubles with Windows Mail.

Do you have an available Restore Point which predates the install of IE8?
Maybe but I don't want to go down this road.

Thanks again. Hope the above info maybe of some use.

Cheers
John

When uninstalling a McAfee security app, it must be followed up
by using their special removal tool, or else a lot of troublesome
debris will be left behind:

Let us know if that fix works. If not, post the exact error message you get.
