I currently use Outlook 2003 and when receiving an external email which has
an email signature included the message shows that there is an attachment
although there isn't one at all. How can I get rid of the "Clip" appearing?

My message format is set up as HTML.

Unfortunately this is unavoidable because an element of the signature is
really attached to the message.

Not true. Even when the signature has an embedded picture in it, Outlook
will not show the paperclip icon. It will only show the paperclip when
something is actually attached. However, malware scanners are known for
breaking this.

Is AVG known to cause this problem? It's all my company runs...

Virus scanner integration in general causes more issues than they claim to
solve. You can safely disable their integration with Outlook.

Sorry this is taking the question a little far... but I have no virus
software installed on my laptop because it's a fairly fresh install of Vista,
and new e-mails that I receive will show the paperclip despite no attachment.
Is antivirus still the explanation?

Does this happen for all your messages?
Is there something embedded in the message?
You can try my macro to check;
