Attaching to email locks up Outlook

When trying to attach to an email the "Look in:" drop-down in the Open dialog
doesn't work and locks up Outlook. I have to use the close button which then
shuts down the email, but not Outlook. If I try to do the same thing in Word
afterwards it behaves the same but is ok beforehand. If I close down Outlook
and attempt to re-open it I get an error message "The operation failed" and I
have to log off and back on before it will open again.

This only started to happen a few days ago and a friend has the same problem.
