recently, I have been unable to open and attached forwarded message, any idea
on what setting I chose to prevent me from doing this. It also has happened
to all messages saved as a .msg file.

Known issue caused by Google Desktop Search.
Uninstall it or update it to the latest version.

If you have Google Desktop Search installed, uninstall it or download the
latest version and configur it to not index mail.
