When I try to open a file (Word, Excel, pdf) directly from Windows Mail
without saving the file, the associated program opens then I get an error
message saying that the file C:\Windows\System32\<filename> could not be
found. Check the spelling, blah, blah, blah ...

Can anyone help explain why this just started happening and what I may need
to do to correct it.

Some have experienced similar problems after installing IE8.
Try this:
Open the Default Programs applet, which you can access either from
the Start menu or via the Control Panel, then click the first item:
"Set your default programs."
After a few seconds, a list of programs comes up. Click on "Windows
Mail". If it doesn't respond with "This program has all its defaults"
then fix it by clicking on the option indicated by the first green arrow.
Then repeat the above but do it for Internet Explorer.

It is connected with IE8, which I installed yesterday. I had already
followed your advice for some other problem, so both Mail and IE have all
their defaults. Still cannot find the attachment.

Assuming you did the Default Programs reset after you installed IE8,
I don't know what else you can try except to uninstall IE8.

A frequent poster in another newsgroup has suggested that this
problem may be due to an incompatibility between McAfee antivirus
and the new IE8 browser. As a workaround, one would either have to
uninstall IE8 or the antivirus program.

I don't think that this theory would be valid.
No MacAfee involved on my side.

Which AV do you have?
I just tested this with my Windows Mail, and had no trouble opening a PDF
attachment. I'm running Eset NOD32 antivirus, and do have IE8.

Never mind. I reread the messages in the other thread, and I see where
you stated that you're not using any antivirus.
I'll run some more tests on my Vista SP2 system.

As to my experience it's NOT AV-related.
On two machines I have Norton AV, the third one has been installed from
scratch as a "test bed", has hardly any additional software on it and
has never seen any AV.

Did you test opening a JPG attachment, if so, frequently after opening
some other attachments?

As I reported in one of the other threads on my machines normally there
is no problem with most file-types (PDF included) initially.
Trying to open a JPG may work initially but it will crash sooner or
later.
And once the JPG crashed, other file-types will have problems too. This
is valid until a log-off/log-in. Sometimes it needs a re-start of the
machine.

It's really crazy.

Rainald
