I am using MS Outlook 2003. In the past week or so, I have been unable to
open email attachments that are nested inside the original email (only one
layer deep). Other attachments behave normally. When I double-click on the
attachment, nothing happens. There is no error message.

I've used the inbox repair tool. I've turned off Google Desktop Search. I've
removed and re-installed Outlook.

Try removing Google Desktop Search completely.

Am having this issue as well - damn nuisance that the two will not co-
exist happily - do you know if this is an issue the google desktop
search people are aware of?
