You are possibly reading HTML mail in plain text?
Tools>options>read tab>disable read all in plain text>apply/OK

Or you have your AV software set to scan incoming mail, AVG is known to do
this on some systems, if so try disabling ANY mail scanning by any
application.

The trouble with unchecking plain text is that I then get any attachments in
main body of e-mail .

The Att file is the attachment, you will only see safe content displayed in
the message body.

You can of course select plain text again and use a key combo to see known
to you photos etc, Alt, V, H on a selected message.

Showing photo attachments in the message as been the default in Outlook
Express and in WM.
