If I recall correctly, Atlantis Nova, unlike Atlantis (not freeware)
does not have a spell checker. The latest version of AbiWord does have
a spell checker and can save in both native, RTF, and DOC formats. It
seems quite stable. I need a werd procesor with a spel cheker
