When I try to open an application I get the following message: The
application has failed to start because ATL.DLL was not found. Re-installing
the application may help." What to do to repair this computer?

maybe you should
either give up trying to
launch that particular program

or

reinstall it like the error message
is advising.

if you are not sure which one
it may be, then you can try to
restore your system to a date
prior to the error popping up

or

you can take an educated guess
and see if there is a program that
is trying to start via the msconfig

or

you can google that dll and see the
results that will be provided to you....

Does it happen with all programs or only one? If only one what program is
that? Is this a newly occurring problem? If so what happened between the
time it worked and when the problem started? Have you tried a system
restore to a point before this problem occurred?

I get the same message with any program I try to open. How can msconfig help?

Also, there are too many Google responses to ATL.DLL

yeh, your right
there were a lot of results.

but i think i found your answer here:

http://www.mcse.ms/message2400825.html

i briefly scanned the postings referenced
and it involves the registry.

i didn't take a detail view of the info since
it appeared that someone with the problem
like yours was able to resolve it....

take a closer look and if you need more
help, i'll be watching your posting...

To do this, follow these steps:
Click Start, click Run, type cmd.exe, and then click OK.
On the prompt command type in:
regsvr32 /u Atl.dll
Press ENTER on your Keyboard to un-register the file.

Type the following line at the command prompt:
regsvr32 Atl.dll
Press ENTER on your keyboard to re-register the file.
Type exit, and then press ENTER on your keyboard.
Restart your computer and see if it will work.
Be sure your computer is clean from malwares as this can indicate that
something buggy or malwares residing on your system.
HTH.
Let us know.

oh,

i transposed the filename as a l t.dll
when it should have been a t l.dll

sorry about that. unfortunately,
the link i gave you was not the solution.

but rechecking microsoft.com, the solution
provided can be found here:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/282857

see if this makes better sense to you...

again, sorry about the transposition. maybe
i still need a bigger font here....
