ati2evxx.exe - What is It? Why is it Running? Other Qs

I installed a Radeon 9600 non pro and the 3.8 drivers and control panel,
then uninstalled the control panel, leaving the drivers in place.

I had to install the control panel, briefly, to get the card to recognize my
monitor can run at 100 Hertz refresh rate at 800 x 600 (by unchecking a DDC
box and manually entering the highest refresh rate). Otherwise it was stuck
at only 75 Hertz, which is the highest refresh rate at the highest
resolution, but not at 800 x 600.

Windows Task Manager says a process named atievxx.exe is running in two
places, using over 3MB of memory.

Why is this running? It's not the drivers. When I look at its properties,
it's described as an "ATI External Event Utility EXE Module." What's that?
Do I need it? If not, how can I stop it from loading?

If I run msconfig, I see a service called "ati HotKey Poller" running.
While I had the control panel installed, I set no hotkeys so this is wasted.
How can I stop it?

Msconfig also shows a service called "ATI Smart" present, but stopped. Can
I get rid of this, and how?

As you may infer, I don't like a lot of unused services and processes
running on my machine.

I notice Flight Simulator 2004 doesn't run as well, using this card and the
3.8 drivers, as it did using the Radeon 9200 and the just-earlier set of
drivers. But that's another can of worms.

Hehe, I found this out only yesterday! The Services program is also
available as an icon in the Administrative Tools menu, if you have that
shown.

You'll also find from Services you can switch off a number of the standard
windows services that aren't really needed.
