I'm shopping for a new computer and trying to decide what kind of video card I
need. Your rant pointed out a problem I have on my current machine about Outlook
Express freezing up. I have a PII 350 Mhz, with an AIW Rage Pro Turbo AGP 2X,
8MB (maybe a driver update changed its name?).
I want to be able to record with a TV Tuner (HDTV capable?), and have S-Video
inputs and outputs for my old analog 27" TV/VCR while using a sound card for
sound. I thought an ALL-IN-WONDER RADEON 8500DV would be a good choice, but the
salesman warned me that this card was old (been out for 18 months at least) and
that ATI recommends trading in for better cards instead of issuing new patches.
Problems with the cards are best fixed by replacement (kind of like VCR's?) to
the higher models available for sale. He suggested I get a Radeon 9000 and buy a
separate mpeg capture card ($90 + $60) if I want to burn VHS or S-VHS to HD to
DVD. After reading the November 13th, 2002 and December 20th, 2002 press
releases at the
www.ati.com site under company info, it says that ATI is
committed to DirectX 9.0 and HLSL using the Radeon 9500 and 9700 series boards
(no mention on 9600?).
Now you tell me that Windows XP has to support functions the ATI software was
supposed to function but won't. I am confused. Hit me again with the bad news
about this one.
I've been to another discussion board this morning that says that the Intel 875
mobo has to have the hyperthreading turned off in order for the ati videocard to
work. Why would I buy the mobo with all the features if the ati card demands
those features not exist?!
What videocard should I use for both Win 98 SE and Win XP? I suppose I'd want
Win XP in Fat 32 on the HD if Win 98SE was not supported by any currently
existing cards, or if I can't find another copy of Win 98 SE cheap.
My budget for a video/capture card is $150 to $200. What is good? Brand not yet
an issue, until a good rant comes along to sway me away.
