I assume you have used the controls on the monitor to shrink the screen
(width, height, overscan etc), or even try a different refresh rate. Or is
this an LCD screen?

List your OS and type of screen CRT or LCD.
I had a similar problem with my CRT monitor, in that it will support
1600*1200/60Hz, but when I set it to that resolution using the 9800 pro it
would overflow the screen, even though my nvidia MX440 and S3 Savage3D cards
had no problem.
In WinXP Pro I am able to turn of Use DDC (display data channel) information
in the Advanced display properties settings and set the maximum resolution
there, but that's not available under all OSes. So I assume the card is
reading the DDC information provided by the monitor.
While a monitor may be capable of a certain max resolution, most
manufacturers have a "recommended resolution" 1024*768/85Hz in my case. I
don't know why this is though.
Just looking at my spec for the monitor it also states that my max
resolution with plug and play is 1280*1024.
Maybe you can find some monitor specific drivers that will allow you to
override plug and play.

HTH.

Mine did this at 1600x1200. I'm running W2K. It seemed to go into a pan
mode. I had to change my monitor drivers or parameters. Can't remember if I
changed it under the monitor tab or display tab or both. But it fixed it.
