any ideas why grand theft auto III would freeze after the the intro video
(whether it's skipped or not) with a black screen for about 5-7 minutes and
then finally bring the game up which would run okay for about 2-3 minutes
and then freeze again? latest patch and drivers installed... no problems
with last video card (kyro II). currently i have an ati radeon 9800. it does
this even with a fresh install of windows. in effect, my point is the only
difference is the card. mobo drivers and everything else are the same.

thanks for any help!

If it pauses when starting the game it usually means it's converting the
textures (it uses a different format according to your gfx card)

Reinstall it.

i don't think that's the issue because it does it even after a fresh install
of windows and the game. the idea about changing fast-writes in the bios
sounds like a good one. thanks for the suggestions guys!

Hey it was happening on mine just.

Have you messed with your startup using msconfig at all?

if so enable everything to do with ATI - theres one thing that checks your
settings or something and enables acceleration.. When you first install your
drivers.

Solved it for me anyway - worth a go.
