ATI Product line - Confused

I'm about to put together an AMD 3500+ 939 system (PCI-e) and I'm a bit
confused as to the current ATI products especially in terms of bangs for
bucks.
My current system is an AGP 4x 9800pro Athlon2200+ and would like to
know which card I should go for. I can't justify spending 300 quid on a
card (actually I can - but my wife would be wearing novelty earings out
of bits of my anatomy if she found out) so would probably opt for the
150 - 200 quid max range.

What's confusing me here is the naming of these products - is a 1300
card faster than an 800 (my logic being bigger number = faster) Probably
flawed logic as I've just looked up the prices of these as I type this -
but I'm sure you get my drift.
Also, where do all of these new cards fit against the performance of my
existing 9800pro? (I realise that for any game that's CPU limited, a
faster CPU will help here anyway)
So I suppose I'm saying: mid price card at least comparable (preferably
better) to a 9800pro AGP4x . what should I look at?

Cheers,

Dave

the logic is there;
Your generation = generation 9
9 - 800 (800 is high)
Next gen is generation 10; X
X - 800 (800 is high)
latest gen is generation 11; X1
X1 - 300 (300 is ****)

I just got myself a second hand X800Pro. It's okay, twice the speed of a
9800Pro. I'd preferred a X800XT, but these are hard to find, and very dear
if found. The X800Pro was 160 euro. Fast AGP cards are disappearing quickly
here.

Here are some comparison guides I found interesting. NVIDIA chips are
included for comparison.

The 9800 Pro is pretty much the equivalent to the X700 Pro. In the X1
line of cards, I wouldn't go for less than an X1600. For the amount of
money you are talking, I would think either an X700Pro or X800Pro
would be the ticket.
