ATI driver problem

I have just installed a replacement graphics card - an ATI X700. The card
works poorly with the standard VGA driver however when I install the ATI
driver the screen blanks out completely. I can remove the driver by starting
XP in safe mode but that leaves me with poor performing graphics. The ATI
site is of no use, has nayone had this problem and found a solution?

thanks

John

John

Are you trying to install the correct driver for your card?.. is it a new
card?.. if it is, do the drivers on the CD not work?.. have you visited the
ATI site for the latest drivers?..

Yes, I have tried the ATI site for the latest driver and get the same
problem. I have also carried carried out all the XP updates but with no luck.

There should have been a CD in the box with the video card. Drivers are on
the CD - did you not try them?

Yes, I've tried the driver from the CD and ATI's site - they both cause the
screen to go blank immediately after installation (I believe the PC is still
running in the background although I can't tell for sure because there is
nothing on the monitor!).

I have tried the drivers both with and without the associated catalyst
software.

You've got the right PCI-E slot, yes? Does this card need to be
connected to the power supply? If it does, did you do this? Is your
power supply beefy enough to handle the card? If you are unsure, swap
out the psu for a more powerful one and see if that helps.

Otherwise, you may have just gotten a bad card and you should take it
back to the vendor.

ATI drivers/user interface only work correctly if you install the .NET
framework.

..NET has something to do with video drivers? If so, what?

Sounds like your monitor can't handle whatever the card defaults to. Try
another monitor.

John

The very first thing that has to be done to successfully install the ATI
drivers is to remove ALL remnants of the previous drivers.

1. go to control panel - add remove programs and remove the previous
drivers. This will normally fix your problem

2. If you still have difficulty-you will have to do a registry search
using a key work e.g. Nvidia. You will need to back up your registry
first do the search and each time a reference is returned deleat it.

3. If you install Catalyst you will have to install net.passport from
the MS web site. There is an older version of catalyst on the ATI web
site, that does not require the net passport this is what I use, it
works much better at least that's what I think. You will still be able
to up grade drivers latter on, but just download drivers only and not
the new catalyst program

Hope this helps

Logan
