Hi..

I suspect that this is going to turn out to be one of those
silly newbie questions, but I gotta start somewhere

Have all in wonder pro (32 megs), win98se, amd 2200+ should it
matter.

Can't figure out why I can record RF input mpeg's complete with
audio nicely, but when I select RGB the audio disappears?
(I can hear it as it plays, but the "capture audio" button is
grayed)

Trying to copy some old vhs tapes of some of the kids and grandkids.

I can do it RF, of course, but the quality is much worse.

Any comments or guidance much appreciated.

The RF (Radio Frequency) actually contains 2 carriers of different
frequencies, the 'aural' and 'visual' for audio and video respectively.
Each of those carriers also has subcarriers for stero, SAP on the audio
side and chroma (color) on the video side. When you select RGB, those
are the actual colors after being decoded from the composite video on
the visual carrier.

Can't you bring in the audio through the sound card?

No this isn't a silly question!

I am going to guess. Obviously RF signal has audio carried with it, but
for an RGB source you need to specify an audio input, probably using
line-in on your sound card. The capture audio button probably only enables
when a valid audio source is selected in the prefs for the capture
software. I can't recall where to set this, but I think I'm putting you in
the right area! If not the sound card, is there an audio input socket
actually on the AIW?

Forgive me, I don't own an AIW!

The AIW has no RGB input. At least not in NA and it appears his post was
from Canada. It has a breakout box in addition to the RF. The breakout box
has Video, S-Video and Audio input. Sound is sent to the sound card via mini
phone plug to the line-in jack on the sound card's rear panel or
(optionally) internally through another cable to the sound cards auxiliary
input. It may be possible to connect directly to the sound card but I never
have. Connections are shown in the troubleshooting section of MMC*.pdf on
the CD that comes with the AIW.

I have a AIW128pro(32MB) in this computer. Using MMC7.7. The only capture
button is video/audio. If this is being grayed out it may mean the card
thinks it's detecting Macrovision. Even if it isn't actually. Might try
different tape(s) and/or player(s).
Check Device Manager and make sure the drivers are installed correctly.
Would need clarification form OP for a better guess.
