ATI & 'multipe screens' on single device

I had to replace, on Dell Inspiron with ATI Mobility Radeon 7500,
Win XP Home Edition with W2k professional.
On XP video driver was super but there was no proper driver,
known to me, for W2k.
I tried many of them (Catalyst, Omega, various versions etc)
and in one occasion a white line (around 1-2mm width) appeared across
the screen
to split device into 2 parts.
I ignored that line and continued looking for a better driver.
Then, at some point in time, another while line appeared this time
dividing upper part (above the first line) into two areas equal in
width.
It is obvious that I have kind of 'multiple' screens on the single
screen.
These white lines are 'active' in terms that once w2k starts while
line feel with chanks of red or purple inherited from some
windows background colors.
I tried to reinstall w2k, but lines appeared before any windows
process.
as soon as machine was rebooted.
Could you please advice how to remove these two lines.

Thanks in advance.

Personally, I would guess the white lines are a hardware, rather than
software, problem if they appear before you install the OS.
