ATAPI Tape Drive - Verify Data Error

I'm running XP SP1 and have just installed a new Travan
10/20 ATAPI tape drive as the secondary slave (there's a
DVD-ROM as master)

The drive appears to write data ok but can not verify
it. Error message is "The device reported an error on a
request to read data from media. Error reported: Bad
data. There may be a hardware or media problem."

Have tried different media, IDE cable, IDE controller,
and software (XP applet, Veritas, and Seagate tape
diagnostics). All with the same result - won't verify.

Any ideas / suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
