Atapi Devices cant be found XP Pro SP2

I have a dual opteron running windows XP Pro SP2. The Bios see all my
hardware fine I can also load windows from cd no problem. Windows finds new
hardware (Sony CD-Rom) loads proper drivers. Then divices are no longer
found. HELP. I am lost on the fix.
