I don't know much about this subject, so I'm sorry if I don't describe my
problem well.

I read that enabling DMA Mode for one or more IDE controllers will make a PC
run better. My problem is the DMA Mode settings used to be in the properties
for my Intel 82801BA Ultra ATA controller in Device Manager, but now I can't
find them. The tab that contained the DMA option is gone, and I don't know
why. I tried uninstalling the aforementioned device and reinstalling it,
which was probably a bad idea because now the Windows taskbar and windows
have the basic gray look, and when I right-click the desktop and go to
Properties the only thing I can see is the theme options.

So if someone can help me with either or both of these problems I'd really
appreciate it.

May be a troyan/virus? Try editing registry and go to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies
In each Key delete all values.
The same within the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies
First make a backup of this keys (export).

You have antivirus? anti-spyware?

Make sure that the device is enabled in the BIOS. Windows can access a
disabled device in PIO mode.

xavmdq, I didn't see any values in those keys.

Jim, in my BIOS, under Primary Master, Ultra DMA Mode is set to "5." I don't
know what that means, but I assume it means the device is enabled since it
isn't set to "Disabled." It doesn't let me highlight and change the setting
for Ultra DMA Mode.

If you run a 850 or less intel chip set,then go to intel,downloads,chip set
software,
download the chipset installation utility,then application accelerator
v2.3,install
the same order.Once installed,open accelerator,you can adjust the DMA
settings
from that,although by default (unlimited) it sets to maximum setting.Read the
help guide.

Some chipset drivers enable DMA automatically, but don't have a tab to
tell you or let you adjust it.
