Having been a satisfied customer of Asus products for some time, and
thinking of buying a notebook computer, I am interested in user
experiences and comments regarding the Asus line of notebook PC's. I am
most likely going AMD 64. In particular, I am wondering if they are
easily upgraded by the end user.

If there is a better ng, please let me know.

If I would need a Notebook, a Transmeta Crusoe seems to be the most
efficient CPU for a (IMO, Antic Powersource) Portable.
Driving a P4 or AMD64 with Batteries is like a cardriven-shopping, with
a Ferrari ;-). Make no sense, IMO.

I would not take something over 20W. The Efficeon (1GHz) needs 5W,
AFAIK.

Let me tell you a rather poor story about my Asus A1B notebook.

I bought it with Windows 2000. Soon thereafter Windows XP
appeared, so I upgraded to Windows XP.

Since then I could no longer view DVD video on the computer,
because the ACPI Embedded Controller (ACPIEC) shot heavy bursts
of error messages into the event log, and during that time,
about every 30 seconds, the movie halted or became intolerably
jerky.

The first idea is that this was a BIOS defect, so I contacted
Asus. Guess their answer: This notebook is delivered with
Windows 2000 and is guaranteed to work only with Windows 2000.
In other words, you cannot upgrade the software and still expect
it to work.

So much for your question whether an Asus notebook can be easily
upgraded by the end user.

Needless to say, I'm now very leery and unlikely to buy an Asus
notebook again.

Like before. The Homecomputer were (are) also outfitted with an OS
(from most being with ROM´s). So any other OS (ROM) is not guaranteed
to work.
And Windows NT (4, 2000, XP ...) have it´s own ROM (BIOS, or better,
HAL), as such :-(

Sure, a good Notebook should do every IBM-PC OS (DOS - XP, Linux,
etc...). Unfortunately many Laptops are designed TO Win98, or 2000. No
Linux (what drivers?), No NT4 (the same), etc....


ASUS fell with quality :-(.... I would like to see more "Made in
Taiwan" ASUS-Stuff again! As it is similar to "Made in Japan", and that
is really good quality stuff, indeed. Having a 1992 Japan CD-Player, I
would never change (serviced two times)... maybe to an Accuphase, if I
would have so much bucks ;-), but nothing beneath ;-))
