ASUS GeForceFX5200 driver update does not take

I have the ASUS V9520/TB GeForce Fx5200 video card and downloaded the latest driver from the ASUS site. I then tried to install this driver but when I am finished it still says GeForce Fx5200 ASUS (Microsoft)

I am concerned that MS windows Xp installed its driver (Microsoft) rather then the downloaded driver, even though I pointed to the downloaded and the unzipped NVDI driver from ASUS.

Also, my Icons seem to be all elogated. I know some should be round like the mailwasher icon, and it is now oblong.

Try a system restore. If that solves your problem, then download the newer driver from ASUS, and save it to a location on your drive. Restart in Safe Mode, and be sure your AV isn't running, then try to install the newer driver.

Visit http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_61.76 and download the
latest NVIDIA drivers directly. Make sure to uninstall the ones you download
from the ASUS website first. After installing the new NVIDIA drivers, reboot
your PC, then right-click on your Desktop and select Properties > Settings,
and change the Color Quality to "Highest (32 bit), then adjust the Screen
Resolution to your liking.

Thanks for the advice.
I went to the site and downloaded the driver and installed it.

Unfortunately I selected too high a resolution by mistake and no when it
boots up the display says the video mode is nbot supported.

Escape, Alt, Ctl, Del does not get me out of this.

I even took the video card out and re-inserted it. No difference. HOW can I
get to change the resolution downwards now?

I cannot un-install the present driver and install the latest driver from
NVDA. When I go to Device Manager and want to un-install there, it will not
let me since it needs the present driver for the startup (boot) of the
windows XP.

So how do I proceed now?

Also, when I go to Ctl. panel and Display, I see there only Themes, nothing
else. Nothing to change resolution etc etc.

Try pressing F8 before the Windows logo shows up. Now choose VGA Mode
and it should boot up so you can see everything. If VGA Mode still
doesn't work, you can do the same thing and choose Safe Mode instead.
This will allow you to change the resolution/refresh rate settings.

Just a note, when you change a resolution to something unsupported, just
wait 15 seconds and it should revert back.

You do not want to uninstall the driver through Device Manager. You are
going to go into Control Panel and open Add/Remove Programs. Now look
for the ASUS Video Card drivers. If there isn't anything in there about
it, don't worry about it. Just download and install the latest nVidia
drivers (which will overwrite the current ones).

Sorry, I forgot to mention one other thing. The icons being elongated
may have to do with a non-standard resolution being selected. I also
had one last question. You said you can't see anything except Themes on
Display Properties. Are you the administrator of the computer? Tabs
can be removed by the Admin of the computer depending on how they choose
to configure Windows for your user group.

I am the Administrator when I sign in under Safe Mode.

That is also now the only way where I can change the resolution, change
screen saver, set background etc.

I used to be able to do that in Normal mode in the Control Panel and then
Display. Not now. ONLY Themes that I can see there now in Normal mode. How
can that be?

Also, when I installed the new NVDA driver it installed without a hitch but
it never came to a screen for Resolution settings, it just came to Finish
very quickly and then gave 2 options, Restart now or Restart later.

Try this first:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs...isplaytabs.reg

If that link doesn't work, it is #285 on the right hand side of
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Also, I would suggest doing the following to clean up the system.

Try running this:
http://rudz.frac.dk/modules.php?op=m...rder=0&thold=0

This will remove all Detonator/ForceWare drivers. Now try installing
the latest drivers from here:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_61.76
