Have a mate who's trying to install two hard drives, a CD ROM and DVD reader
under Windows 98. For some reason the ASUS DVD drive doesn't want to share a
cable with either of the other hard drives. All drives are set to cable
select.

Has anyone else had a problem like this?

Any suggestions?

Could be a cable problem. If it is a 40wire cable, most of them were not
cable select capable. The newer 80wire cables are supposed to be cable
select, but might not be in this case. You can also hard wire the drives,
one master, one slave, on the cable and see if that fixes it.

I wouldn't trust cable select... It's simple enough to set them as
Master/Slave.
