Just wanted to verify that the version of CnQ that I have is 1.022. This
was installed from the ASUS disc that came with the A8n32SLI mb. When I ran
it, it did not seen to do anything and yes before you ask, it is enabled in
the bios 1009.

I noticed on ASUS web site the latest CnQ version is 1.222 so I downloaded
it and installed it over the existing version. It first said it had to
uninstall that, but the menu item still states it is version 1.022. Am I
missing something here or is the latest version just a typo.
Thanks,
Randy

Did you install both the CnQ driver and software from the ASUS CD?
Did you select the Minimal Power Management option under Power Option
Schemes?

Yes I did install the drivers but did not select MPM under the power option
so I tried that and rebooted. It still appears not to have any effect on
the CnQ application. I have a 2.8Ghz AMD FX57 and that is the freq. CnQ
indicated with a voltage of 1.44V. Should the freq. change base on the need
for power?
I did read somewhere that if you enable PowerBoost, CnQ won't work. Any
input?

Are you talking about the CnQ GUI monitor that tells you the CPU speed? That
is irrelevant and it does not matter which version you have.

In order to enable CnQ, you must configure Windows Power correctly (in
addition to setting it up in the bios). It is documented in your Asus user
manual. You can download the manual if you don't have the paper version.

OK, I must be really missing something because I don't see anywhere in the
manual (lastest download) about setting the windows power correctly. All it
says is to enable it in the bios.

I checked your manual and didn't see it either. But it is documented at the
end of the A8N-E manual that you can download. Unfortunately, the PDF
security for the manual is set to not allow copy, so I can't copy and paste
here.

The instructions for the bios setting may not be exactly correctly for your
version of the bios, but it is close enough to figure out (you have to
change 2 different bios settings). They also explain how to change windows
power management in the final step to make it work.

The instructions are on the last few pages of the A8N-E manual.

Find an A8N-SLI manual and read that. This is extracted from the
Premium manual.

*******
5.7.1 Enabling Cool n Quiet! Technology
To enable Cool n Quiet! Technology:

1. Turn on the system and enter BIOS by pressing the <Del> key during
the Power On Self-Tests (POST).
2. In the Advanced > CPU Configuration > AMD CPU Cool &
Quiet Configuration menu, select the item Cool NQuiet and set
it to Enabled. See section 4.4 Advanced Menu in the
user guide.
3. In the Power menu, select the item ACPI 2.0 Support and set it
to Yes. See section 4.5 Power Menu in the user guide.
4. Save your changes and exit BIOS Setup.
5. Reboot your computer and set your Power Option Properties
depending on your operating system.

Windows 2000/XP
1. From the Windows 2000/XP operating system, click the Start
button. Select Settings ,then Control Panel .
2. Make sure the Control Panel is set to Classic View.
3. Double-click the Display icon in
the Control Panel then select the
Screen Saver Savertab.
4. Click the Power... button. The
following dialog box appears.
5. From the Power schemes
combo list box, select Minimal
Power Management.
6. Click OK to effect settings.

Make sure to install the Cool n Quiet! driver and application
before using this feature.

5.7.2 Launching the Cool n Quiet! software

The motherboard support CD includes the Cool n Quiet!
software that enables you to view your systems real-time
CPU Frequency and voltage.

To launch the Cool n Quiet! program:

1. If you are using Windows 98SE/ME/2000, click the Start button.
Select Programs > ASUS > Cool & Quiet > Cool & Quiet.
2. If you are using Windows XP, click the Start button. Select All
Programs > ASUS > Cool & Quiet > Cool & Quiet.
3. The Cool n Quiet! technology screen appears and displays the
current CPU Frequency and CPU Voltage.

Make sure to install the Cool n Quiet! software from the motherboard
support CD. Refer to section 5.2.3 Utilities menu, for details.
*******

Uninstalling an older version is always a good idea, before trying
to use a newer one. Hope it isn't all messed up.

You must select "Minimal Power Management" from the "Power Schemes"
drop-down from the "Display Properties" "Screen Saver" tab. This is for
Windows XP. You may be prompted for s restart. This is the step that
links the BIOS and the driver to arrive at the computer controlled
voltage and frequency adjustment.

Thanks every one! I find it interesting that this issue of "Minimal Power
Management" was not discussed in the latest manual for the new A8N32SLI mb.

On Windows XP, When you set Power Options to Minimal Power Management
AMD's CnQ is then Enabled, any other power selected and it's turned off.
