I found some really cheap computers advertised online at:

They use PC Chip MB, ASUS, or ECS motherboards. Somebody said the PC Chip
boards aren't very good. What about the others? Pros or cons.

PC-Chips and ECS are the same thing... And both sucks...

ASUS is very good, but they have cheapo mobos too... The ones based on SIS
chipset mostly... I would run from such crappy stuff...

What you pay is what you get... It's always been like that... Remember
that... You should better buy a second-hand or even new motherboard, but the
one that won't hurt your nerves... People who are into building computers
(like me) don't like lousy mobos, because it is the main part of the
system, and if you screw things here, you'll be cursed... You could be
nervous all the time, or just wait till computer crashes without any reason,
or simply you will have trouble installing drivers...

This is only an advice, you do what you want...

Not som fond of PC Chips boards, they seem a little flimsey. ECs boards
seems to be good for the price. I have installed a few ECS boards into
budget machines and they seem to go on and on.
Asus make great boards, I always been a fan of Asus.
It depend how much you want spend?

All boards got their pros and cons.

Asus is the worst of the bunch. They SCREAM if you get a good one, but
many are flakey as the quality just isn't there and they try to tweak
the chipset/timings a bit too much. If your memory or power supply are
not top notch, you can expect trouble from ASUS

I've never had problems with ECS, but they are low end. As long as you
buy from a reputable dealer, the money saved with an ECS board can go
into other parts, like memory or a faster video card. Middle of the
road boards are MSI and Gigabyte.

Asus are good boards, I know many people who got Asus boards in their
machines and not one have had any majopr problems with them.

ECS are good boards for the price and do seem very stable, but they have
their limtations. they are certainly not much good for overclocking .

MSI was top of the range a few years back, they was very expenisive, but
you had quality.
Gigabyte was ok in the old pentium days, I also know people who got
gigabytes boards and they using CPUs like 200mhz up to 400mhz. The
boards work well. I do not know what their Athlon and P4 boards are like.


I got my first Abit board and I think it is great, it is a shame that
Soyo do not make a board like the Abit nf7-s, other wise i would got
one, i LIKE sOYO.

ECS SUCKS the big one. I had two motherboards die from then on
warrantee, and by the second one I said, screw this, I'm going Asus
(which make nice mobos).

You must have had bad luck with ECS, I must admit, i was a bit sceptical
at first, but i have built a few budget machines with ECS boards and
they all work fine.

My mate even got a ECS board which we use for a second games machine, it
is fine for playing Quake 3 on, even with the built in AGP graphics.
The best thing about it is, you can still add a AGP graphics card if you
want to. you can also use SDram or DDR memory.
My nephew got an ECs, again it works fine and he is more than happy with it

Good boards for the price.
Asus is not in the same bracket.
