Hello , I want to buy a new cpu for this motherboard. Its using bios 1.008
and its the original A7N8X , not the deluxe or any other model. I am using
an Athlon XP 2400 right now. How high can I go , I assume this board rev
1.04 and bios 1.008 can let me go all the way to ATHLON XP 3200 but Im not
positive..also what bus speed would I need to purchase as I see sometimes
different bus speeds on the Athlon cpu's. Any links to good cpu deals for
this board would also be appreciated..TIA

Yes, the Athlon XP 3200 is the fastest CPU for that board....unless you're
into overclocking then, you'd want to buy a Mobile CPU.

Here is the info page at the ASUS website which lists all possible
processors that are supported by your motherboard....

Thx a lot my friend , 1 more question. I am using 1 gig of PC 3200 DDR ram
in dual channel format ( 512 in each channel ) will that be good enough for
me to run the 400 mhz bus 3200 cpu or will i need to step down to the XP
3000 at 333 bus speeds. I just want to make sure , I am pretty sure I will
have no problem with the 3200 or it wouldn't be in this list for my board to
use without some mention of why it may or may not work.

I don't know too much about the 3200 CPU. There may be 333 and a 400
version. Also, is the multiplier locked?... someone else is going to have
to answer those questions...or, try a google search.

As for running dual channel 400 FSB, according to my motherboard manual,
only the PCB 2.0 supports it.

True, but he should be able to hit 195 (390) perhaps even
197 (394). I used to run mine at 193 (386) just to be very
stable. That was with a 2500 Barton I think.

Luck;
Ken

From what I am reading on the cpu support page for A7N8X is that if you
have board version 1.04 or higher and bios 1004 then this chip should
work..here is the info below..is this wrong?

A7N8X

CPU
Since PCB
Since BIOS
Note

Athlon XP 3200 (400 MHz FSB)(Model 10)(Barton) 1.04 1004
If your motherboard BIOS version number is greater than
the BIOS version listed above, then you will not need to flash your BIOS.
However, if your BIOS version is smaller than the version listed above, then
you will need to select and download the latest BIOS to update your system.
We kindly remind you that there is a certain risk level involved in BIOS
flashing, please refer to "BIOS Flashing Method ". If you still have doubts,
we will strongly advise you to consult with a PC Professional or your PC
dealer for further assistance.

I don't remember ever getting either of my 1.04 boards to 200.
But the difference isn't that big a deal. You may get lucky though.

Luck;
Ken
