for the Asus A7N8X-E motherboard, which model Athlon CPU should I buy if I
want best performance possible ...

any other hints welcome.

I would think the Athlon XP 3200+ but price/performance I would consider
the Athlon XP 2800+ (memory is also going to influence performance.)
You might try looking around for reviews on the board and see what
others say.
