I am trying to change the application used to read a
particular file type. When trying to do so under the
tools,folder options menu, all of the change edit remove
etc buttons are dimmed. If I sign on as admin no
problem. However the changes are not carrying over to the
user. Obviously something needs to be changed to give the
user these options. Any ideas?

For what extension? Some file type associations are user specific in Windows
2000. From a command prompt;
(an example)

assoc .zzz = zzzfile
would create (register) a file type association of all *.zzz files to type
"zzzfile"
