Dear Team,

I have set up a Windows Server 2003 on a laptop PC in order to experiment
with Visual Studio .NET.

On attempting to set up Active Directory, I get the message:

"The wizard has detected that there are no valid IP addresses assigned to
any of the network adapters for this computer. Please verify that the
network cable is connected, and that a DHCP server is available or the
computer is configured to use a static IP address, then click Next"

As I don't intend that this laptop will be connnected to a network, what is
the best strategy for me to use as regards setting up an IP address for it?
I do occasionally connect to the Microsoft website to download updates, and
want to retain that capability.

Looking at the help file I find I have a large number of options:

Install Simple TCP/IP
Configure TCP/IP for dynamic addresssing
Configure TCP/IP for automatic addressing
etc.
etc.

but no particular case seems to fit my circumstances.

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

Thanks for your post. I reviewed your request carefully, and now I'd like
to share the following information with you:

1. We need to dediate an IP address in order to install Active Directory.
Please refer to the following KB article for detailed information to
resolve the problem:

How to Configure Active Directory on a Home Network
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=260362

Does your laptop have a network card? If not, you should install and
configure "Microsoft loopback adaptor".

BTW, in the future, it would be best to post these questions in the
following newsgroup.
Microsoft.public.windows.activedirectory
Microsoft.public.win2000.active_directory

Have a nice day!
