Assigned task does not open in inbox and can't be accepted

's Computer Specifications

I and my college have tried to assign tasks to each other but the "e-mail"
does not open in inbox. With the calendar it works and we can schedule
meetings and accept invitations. We can see the assigned task with the
preview function but when "accept" or "reject" is pushed nothing happens. Can
anyone help us?

The version is Office 2003 and Windows XP. I saw some users had the same
problem in january 2006 when removing some security updates solved it but it
seems quite complicated to find the rigth one after all the time that has
passed.
