What do you mean by external. External to what?
If you add a shape to a toolbar or a sheet, you can attach code to it to
activate a macro with a click event..

If you are asking that how to place an icon on the toolbar for a macro then
follow the following steps:

1: Tools>>Customize
2: In Categories list>>Select Macros
3: And in the Commands list click the macro you want to make an icon and
drag it to the toolbar where you want to place it........

If you are not asking this...... Then explain you question more briefly.
