Aspect ratio

I have a large MPG that plays fine on any computer but
mine, any version of Media (I have the only Win XP in the
company). On mine, version 9 of Media, playback is at a
sort of letterbox aspect ratio which means of course
everything is distorted. No matter what I do I can't
change it. Any suggestions?
