A friend of mine has been downloading speeches in ASF format and wants
to burn them to a DVD.
I've looked for a freeware conversion utility, found one (Stoik
Converter) that, on a download link claims to do ASF files, but after
installation, I find that it doesn't. Found another that will read an
ASF file but won't output in the right format and it installs an
advertising bar above the taskbar.

Does anyone here know of a utility that will do this?

Have a look at the "rm to mpg converter ?" thread.
Both suggestions should do the trick for you.

Jona... thanks for the link. I downloaded, installed and it gives an
invalid instruction error on startup.

Repeated the operation, and still the same. Looked at another
suggestion but it was command line and this is for an elderly man who
could never wrap his mind around command line.

OK, try www.stoik.com for "Stoik video converter"

I'm not sure whether it's still freeware, but my ver1.1 is.
I downloaded in 2004 though.

Jona..... I've looked at the new Stoik. It is freeware, but won't read
ASF files, although it says so on download links from other sites.
Their own site however, lays no claim to ASF files and it says it can't
read the file chosed if you try to convert an ASF file. Pity, it seems
to be a well written and simple to use program.

I haven't used it myself yet, but SUPER claims to be able to convert ASF
files.
