I'd like to use IE to ftp between a UNIX box and my
Windows machine. In Advanced Internet Options, I have
checked "Enable folder view for FTP sites." Is there a
way for me to specify ASCII or Binary mode prior to doing
a file transfer?

Thanks for any help with this!

Good question :

I believe IE auto uses the mode necessary to download, but just like Unix, the MS-DOS ftp client download mode can be set.
