I'm posting this because I searched and searched and could not find the exact
answer to my problem. Several posts came close, but then veered off on a
tangent.
I am using Outlook 2003 on a Windows XP Pro machine. I tried archiving for
the first time. I entered all my settings in the Auto-archive box (right
clicked on folder I wanted to archive, click the AutoArchive tab) and set my
defaults. Messages disappeared from my inbox, but there was no Archive
folder even though I had checked the "Show Archive folder in folder list"
option. I verified the location of the archive.pst file and navigated there
in Windows Explorer. There was no archive.pst file (or any .pst files).
After confirming hidden files were being displayed, I searched my machine for
*.pst...nothing. My messages were gone!
After trying several things, finally what worked was going to File -->
Archive..., checking the "Archive this folder and all subfolders:" option,
choosing a folder in the window, setting my archive date limit, and clicking
Browse. It defaulted to the C:\Documents and Settings...\Local
Settings...\Outlook folder where I had already confirmed there was no
archive.pst file. "archive.pst" was already in the File Name box. When I
clicked OK, I saw my HD light start flashing. I checked my Windows Explorer
window and saw that an archive.pst file had been created and there was now an
"Archive Folders" in my folder list with all my archived folders/messages!
