We have an archive set up to run every day. When Outlook is launched & the
archive begins everything looks fine. The problem is that three hours from
now the archive will still be running. I successfully got it to complete the
archive yesterday, but it took just over three hours. I hoped that since we
just archived yesterday that today the bugs might be worked out. We're going
on hour 2.

Without any detailed configuration information it is impossible to tell what
is going on. Where are you archiving from and where are you archiving to?

Always make sure that the archive file is on the local computer's hard drive
and not on a network share.

So what is the size of your mailbox or .pst file? Obviously the
larger it is then the longer it takes to compare each item against
your archiving criteria. It sounds like not much is getting archived
so you still have a huge mailbox or .pst file to scan every time. My
28MB .pst file takes 6 seconds to scan for the auto-archiving
function.

We are archiving from our Exchange server onto a shared network drive. We
can't archive to the hard drive because it wouldn't be backed up each night
when our backups run.
Is there a reason why you recommend not using a network share?

The mailbox .pst is 49M & the archive .pst is 643M. I know that's a large
archive, but it's nowhere near the 2G limit.
Do you think 3hrs is a reasonable amount of time for a 49M mailbox?

Pst-files are designed for personal storage (that's why it is called a
pst-file) and were never designed to be written to and read from a network
share. Still doing so will result in poor performance or even data loss.
Microsoft doesn't recommend nor supports connecting to a pst-file on a
network share.

Keep the pst-files locally and use the pst backup adding from Microsoft or a
script to copy the pst-file to a network share when Outlook is closed. Even
better; consider a server-side (Exchange) archiving solution.

Yes, since you keep them on a network share and archiving is disk intensive
and now all those requests have to be turned into network packages.

Our entire organization is set up to store their archives on their User Drive
on our network. The mailbox in question is the only one that seems to have
this problem of slow archiving. Are there any other factors I could consider
& look into that would contribute to a long archive time?

Is archiving enabled only for folders in the current message store
(.pst file)? Or do you also have archiving enabled on some folders in
the archive message store?
