On an annual basis, I would like to preserve the contents of a discussion
child web - as an "archive". Its important that this "archive" maintain all
posts and threads and the search function but have posting and reply to
functions disabled - so that the archive is not "added-to".

I'd appreciate any suggestions on an approach to this problem.?

Your DW should be a separate subweb
Publish the current DW subweb to a new subweb (Say Achive01)
Then delete the current DW and create a new empty one (for the now active new one)

Open the Archive01 subweb and delete the post / reply links on the headers

Create the appropriate links to/from you root web to the active DW and Archive01 DW

Thanks Stefan, but a few more questions. First, is there a limit to the
number of child webs? Second, Since it's only the hyperlinking association
that are needed to be preserved (post and include functions aren't needed as
no new post will be accepted to an "archive"; would changing the child web
to a simple folder do this w/o compromising t the PF server extensions.

Under the FP 2000 or 2002 SE you can have unlimited subwebs
Keep them as subwebs, not folders or the DW search won't work
