Archive Load Time

Outlook 2003, Exchange Server on SBS 2003 Server.
Several users have archive files over 6Gigs in size. These archives are
stored on a data partition of our server so that they can be backed up each
night. Main exchange mailboxes are kept as clean as possible.
Although the help files say the archive pst files can be as big as 20Gig we
are finding that users with files around 6Gig to 12Gig are having difficulty
running outlook and/or searching within the archive.
Wondering if breaking the archives into separate pst files of no more than
2gigs each would help with load time, or if Outlook would still drag because
it would have to preload each archive?
Would prefer not to keep the archives on local hard drives for backup and
security reasons.
Thanks.
Bonnie
