When I try to open the archive folder on my folder list, I get a message that
" The set of folders cannot be opened. File access is denied. You do not
have permission required to access the file c:\archive.pst". I did notice
that there is also a file archive (1) when I explore my c drive.

What method are you using to try to open the file? You have to open it from
within Outllook -- you can't open it from Windows Explorer. Also, make sure
the file is not marked read-only.

I am trying to open this file in Outlook. There seems to be no way to see
the properties of this file as that button is grayed out. The only available
choices after I right click are: Open, Open in New Window, New Folder, Remove
from Favorite Folders and Process All Marked Headers. i know this file has
stored emails in it and was accessible in the past.

What you've described sure sounds like the file is already open in
Outlook...you can't right-click on something that isn't there. Are you in
the Folders view on the Navigation Pane? What is the topmost folder in the
set of folders in that file?
