I have dealt with this issue before but my computer had to be reimaged and I
lost the solution so I am hoping someone can help.

I am using IMAP which I know Outlook 2007 doesn't support very well.

Well when I try and archive, it generates multiple errors like this: Error
while archiving folder "Access" in store "KJB". The destination folder
contains items of a different type than the source folder. Verify both the
source and destination folders contain the same type of items.

This is because the folders contain IMAP items but the archive folders
contain "mail and post" items.

How do I generate an archive file with folders that contain imap items so
that they match?

I deleted the archive folder and started a new one but no luck - the archive
folder contains mail and post items.

I would appreciate any help.

I made a mistake in the last sentence. I deleted the Archive FILE and
allowed Outlook to create a new file and the new file contains folders of
"mail and post" items.

Not likely. IMAP folders contain "mail and post" items as well. All mail
folders do. You can prove that to yourself if you wish.

What this sounds like to me is that your IMAP folders are ANSI and your
Archive PST if Unicode or vice versa. Check that. Right-click the root of
the IMAP folders and choose Properties. Then click Advanced. Examine the
Format field. Do the same with the Archive PST. Do those fields match
exactly?

Thank you for your help. The root of the IMAP folder says format: "Personal
Folders File"

The Archive folder also says: Personal Folders File.

I am not seeing anything about Unicode or any such option about character
sets.

contains drafts, outbox, RSS feeds etc. Then there is my IMAP folder that is
mapped to another outlook data file.

My theory is that it looks at the first folder and creates an Archive for
"mail and post items" instead of creating a folder of "IMAP items". Do I
need to have a separate archive file for each of the two folders? (I don't
care about archiving the personal folders as they are generally empty)

OK - regarding types, the IMAP folders do contain "IMAP items" instead of
"mail and post items". At least on my version: Outlook 2007.

As far as some quick experimentation shows, I'm not convinced you can archive
IMAP folders, despite the options being available. The "IMAP Items" type for
folder contents isn't available when creating a folder manually in any PST.
You may be right that it is the difference between "IMAP Items" and "Mail and
Post Items" causing this. However, when I create a folder in my IMAP store, I
choose "Mail and Post Items", the folder gets created, and the Properties says
"IMAP Items" when I check after creation, so who knows? I don't really want
to enable autoarchiving to test this out and I don't have a testbench PC right
now where I can enable autoarchive. Perhaps another MVP can test this more.

Well I know I managed to archive before. I used to use POP for my email
then I got an iPhone and at that time I switched my account to IMAP so that
the iPhone and my PC could be in sync when reading emails. At that time this
archive error started and I believe I created a new archive folder and that
solved the problem. I definitely have been archiving IMAP messages since
then. If I open the old archive – they are “mail and post” items so it must
be archiving to them successfully from a folder of “IMAP items”.

What happened to break it was that my laptop was repaired and they reimaged
it – grrrr – so I have to get Archive working again and hence I am having the
probs. I had Outlook create a new archive file but to no avail. There must
be something else amiss so any suggestions would be welcome…

Did you try Help>Office Diagnostics? Did you try a new mail profile?

Hmm never tried office diagnostics Brian but I did and it found no problems.

Havent tried a new profile - wont that lose all my account settings?
