Apropos Media Spyware - NEED BEST FREE REMOVAL

I cannot get this thing off my computer. Microsoft antispyware finds it
almost daily, deletes it and it keeps popping back up. I've used
Earthlink Spyware Blocker, plus some free programs and NOTHING gets rid
of it. I don't know enough to start editing my registry manually.

HELP!

Also when I try to get a "free" spyware, it scans and then always asks
for money. What is the best free one that will actually work without cash?

I'm guessing the "free" programs you're using aren't among the commonly
recognized standbys.

First off, if you're running XP or ME, disable System Restore. Then
update and run M$AS again. That very well may fix it.

Other tools/cleaners to try should include:

Ad-Aware: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/default.shtml.en

Spybot Search & Destry: http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/

CWShredder:
http://www.intermute.com/spysubtract..._download.html

a2 (a-squared): http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/free/

These two tools will help *prevent* future infection:

SpywareBlaster: http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

MVPS HOSTS: http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

Of course, this all also assumes you have a reputable, updated, active
scanning anti-virus program in place.

HTH. Good Luck.

Symantec Spyware.Apropos Removal Tool 1.0.1

Spyware.Apropos is an Internet Explorer Browser Helper Object. It
installs a toolbar that links to Web sites and sends information.
Symantec Security Response has developed a removal tool for
Spyware.Apropos. Use this removal tool first, as it is the easiest way
to remove this threat.

For those using HighjackThis, post your logfile here.

HijackThis log file analysis & repair ( online )
http://hijackthis.de/index.php?langselect=english
Or ,
http://hjt.iamnotageek.com/
HijackThis is a program used by experienced users in order to detect
browser hijackers. It allows you to identify any sort of spyware and
malware (as well as some trojan horses and worms). This is achieved
by scanning special zones of the registry as well as the hard disk
drive, the results being listed in a structured window. Another
feature of HijackThis is the creation of a log file, which can be
saved as a simple text file and opened by any text editor (notepad
as default). Until now, inexperienced users, who could not analyze
the log file by themselves, had no other choice than posting it in a
specialized forum and to hope that a more experienced user takes some
time to analyze it. The script presented on this page is a way to
analyze your log without help from the outside: simply copy/paste
the content of the log file in the textbox below and hit the analyze
button.

There is also <http://www.help2go.com/modules.php?name=HJTDetective>.
But I wouldn't run just one auto-analyzer on a HJT log file, I'd run
all three and compare results.
Items they all agree on (good or bad) are a pretty safe bet that the
items are as indicated. Items they don't agree on or don't recognize
requires human intervention. If you don't recognize the item or have
any doubt about it, look it up (Google) and/or ask someone about it.

Anyone planning to use an HJT auto-analyzer should be made aware,
*BEYOND ANY DOUBT*, that NOT every entry in the log file is bad. It
contains BOTH good and bad entries. HJT only reports what it finds in
specific locations. The auto-analyzers can only help to determine if
those items listed are good, bad or unknown, based on the information
contained in its database(s). The auto-analyzers are great time
savers for both experienced and inexperienced users IF used with some
common sense and caution.

Thank you! I will try this. I hate this stuff. I'd like to pinch off
the head of anybody who does this ****. Ok, rant over! (such
unladylike language).

THANk you all!! I downloaded the removal tool and it appears to have
found it and gotten rid of it. I've rebooted to see and I'll run my
other two spyware blockers to see if it worked.

If not, I'll do "Hijack this" and ask for expert help.

This is the most pesky thing I've ever had. A pox on spyware/virus
types!!

I ran the removal tool on Apropos media, and it cleared the machine, but
last night after my microsoft spyware blocker ran it found it again in 9
places. I ran the tool again and it said "not found on machine".

What's going on?
