My question was do I NEED to be in "open site" in order to apply theme?

I already specified I would like to apply on current or selected page, which
is the option I want to use so I can determine whether or not I want to apply
it on all pages.

This is the first time I have read about having to use borders.

I appreciate the effort you have put into trying to help me get this thing
going.

Thank you.

Yes, you must have a web / site open in FP. FP uses Shared Borders to add your page header, footer
and left side navigation, which are all based on your navigation view.
