Applying A Policy From A Windows 2000 Domain Controller To Windows 98 And Windows NT

I've got a network that is running several Windows 2000 DCs with several
Windows 2000 Professional clients, some Windows 98 clients, and a couple of
Windows NT 4.0 machines.

I created a system policy on one of the Windows NT 4.0 machines, using the
system policy editor that's part of the NT 4.0 OS, gave the policy the name
"ntconfig.pol", and copied it to the NETLOGON folder of the primary Windows
2000 DC. When I then go back to one of the NT4.0 machines and log on, the
policy is found on the 2000 DC and applied to the NT4.0 box.

I used the same system policy editor (the one on the NT 4.0 computer) to
create another policy, called "config.pol", for Windows 98 clients. I then
copied that policy to the NETLOGON folder (the same one where I placed the
"ntconfig.pol" file). However, when I log on to the Windows 98 client, the
policy is not applied.

I have user profiles on the Windows 98 machine, and I checked the registry
(I don't remember off the top of my head the correct entry), but it's the
one that should be set to "1" to check a DC for policy--the registry setting
is set to "1" as it should. In fact, when I log on to the Windows 98 client
I see a brief message stating something to the effect of policies being
downloaded/applied.

Any ideas? I'm wondering if perhaps the system policy editor on the Windows
NT 4.0 machine can not be used to create policies for a Windows 98 device.
Does anyone know if the same editor can be used for both OSs, of is there a
specific editor for Windows 98?

Any pointers would be appreciated.

Regards,

Richard Huelbig

For Windows 98-based clients, use the version of System
Policy Editor that is included on the Windows 98 compact
disc (CD).
