I am a newbie as far as w2k server is concerned.i have set
up a test lan using one win2k server and 2 winxp pro
computers. i have created active directory and i wish to
know how to apply group policies to winxp clients. only
specifying policies to organizational units does not help.
are there any other settings required.i have added users
to ou. also winxp takes a long time to log onto the domain.
pl. help.

These are Active Directory and Group Policy questions,
and there are newsgroups for these topics.
You likely do not have your DNS correct, or your clients
are not using it, or both.

You do target the GPOs primarily at OUs.
The OUs need to contain the things you wish to have the GPO applied to -
such as the machines or user accounts.
Those objects then also need to have the appropriate permissions on the GPOs
to be able to read them and to apply them.

Mike's info is quite correct.
When you said
"also winxp takes a long time to log onto the domain"
I read a DNS issue. And, if the SRVs are not located
then you will have group policy problems also.
