Applications Starting at Startup

There seem to be a couple of apps that are starting automatically at
startup. I've check the startup folder and don't see them in there. I did
have a registry utility which listed several of them as running at start
up - I'm assuming based on keys in the registry.

How would I stop them from running automatically?

Click Start / Run, then type msconfig.exe to see all Startup Tasks and to
disable them if desired.

The best way is to go in the applications themselves and find the option
to have it run at boot time and disable it from there. If you can't
find it in the application's options you can try these:

http://codestuff.tripod.com/

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/s.../bb963902.aspx
Autoruns for Windows

Be *very* careful with Autoruns, don't disable things that you are
unsure of as this might prevent you from successfully booting the computer!

There are /many/ "startup managers". TOO many to choose from!
MSConfig is "sort of" one of them but gives you VERY little
information about the processes and the design is a little messy
and confusing IMHO.

Autoruns is very good but I found it a little complex to fully
decipher and comprehend.
I'd suggest this one:

http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml

It has excellent reviews, and is very simple and easy to use -
just READ THE WHOLE PAGE (maybe even save it for reference, it's
short) before doing anything!

Disabled Messenger: Tools>Options>Preferences unchecked box; Run Windows
Messenger when Windows Starts. No problem, removed from System Configuration
Utility>Start up. (msconfig)

Tried to remove other program from Start Up via (msconfig), and disabling
start up item. System Utility enters selective start up mode and promts me to
restart in normal mode. Program still in start up after reboot.

I've checked both and can't see any 'Autorun features' on the two offending
applications.

They usually aren't called "autorun features."

Which particular programs are you referencing? Perhaps someone here has
experience with them.

There are several ways a program can start at bootup. To stop them if not in
msconfig startup (or if they return
after reboot) you need to edit the registry.
Start---run---regedit---ok---Go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINES\Software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run
and delete it there.
