I would like the applications I have for XP to show more file names than just
the standard four. If this is controlled by XP, how can I increase the
number? I have looked just about everywhere. XP can do just about
everything else, I guessing that it can do this. I am not interested in the
most recent files shown by clicking the Start Button, but by the list shown
when you click on "File" on an open application.

Each application should have its own settings for how many names
show up there. IT's not an XP thing for the settings.
Usually it's in the Tools menu but might be in Preferences or
something similarly named.
In general, the highest you can set the number is 9. Open
each program and look in the menues suggested above.

XP does not control this function. Each application will have an options setting that is used for the number of files shown in that list. For example, in Microsoft Word, go to Tools/Options/General tab and you will see an option to set the number for "Recently used file list".
