Applications hang when printing to network connected printer

Hi Everyone,

I'm having a problem printing to a printer that is
connected via a usb port and shared with other computers
in a workgroup. When I print from one of these computers
the application I'm printing from appears to hang. If I
turn off bi-directional support from the printer,
printing works but I can only print one copy of any
document. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.
