Dear All,
For some reason or other, my Windows XP appears to have stopped playing
certain sounds whenever it starts up or shuts down. I have also noticed
that it does not play sounds when certain applications start up, or
whenever I get new mail. In this case, the default sound happens. I can
play the sounds otherwise, and have tried to change them back by
browsing, and then clicking on 'apply'.
Until recently, all was well, so I presume that something has changed,
but I cannot think of what I have done to change this.
Any help would be appreciated.

Dear Byte,
Sorry to say, but I am still unable to get any sounds at all. I have
tried my own sounds scheme as well as the default Windows one. I can
play all sounds through something like Windows Media, so I know that the
sound card is not at fault.
Any other help would be greatly appreciated.
